Building Electrification and the Crucial Role of Commissioning

• Written by Thomas T. Jarløv
Webinar Building Electrification Commissioning

What is Building Electrification

In an era where sustainability and reducing carbon emissions are paramount, "Building Electrification" has emerged as a powerful solution. It involves the adoption of electrical solutions for space and process heating, including domestic hot water, as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

The primary objective of electrification is to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions associated with carbon-based fuels, commonly referred to as decarbonization. Achieving this goal requires not only a shift in energy sources but also a fundamental transformation of grid electricity generation towards carbon-free alternatives.

So, why is commissioning crucial in the context of building electrification?

Commissioning role in the context of building electrification

Commissioning plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of building electrification initiatives. It begins with a comprehensive review and evaluation of Owner’s Project Requirements, ensuring that electrification goals align with project objectives.

This process extends to encompass system performance, reliability, maintainability, and resiliency objectives. Through diligent commissioning, we can maximize the benefits of electrification while mitigating potential challenges.

Webinar: Building Electrification Commissioning

Building electrification is transforming the way we power our spaces and processes, reducing carbon emissions and driving sustainability. 🌱 Brendon Mattis, PE, CxA, LEED AP, from Engineering Economics, will guide us through the critical role of commissioning in this electrifying journey.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding Electrification Goals: We'll explore the broader objectives of building electrification and its critical role in reducing carbon emissions from the building energy sector.
  • Immediate Emissions Impact: Discover the immediate environmental impact of electrification and how it contributes to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
  • Challenges and Opportunities: Dive into the intricacies of designing and operating electrified buildings, highlighting both challenges and exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
  • Commissioning Strategies: Identify recommended strategies for building electrification projects, with a special focus on the indispensable role of commissioning in achieving success.

Consider this: Nationally, a significant portion of electricity - about 62% - is currently generated from fossil fuels. This means that for every unit of electrical output, we are inputting three units of fuel energy, all with associated carbon emissions. To accelerate near-term emissions reduction, electrification projects should first prioritize load reduction and energy efficiency strategies. Additionally, the choice of systems that efficiently utilize electrical input, thereby avoiding electric resistance heating, is paramount.
